British Values at Harlow Fields School and College
At Harlow Fields School and College, we are dedicated to promoting the fundamental British Values as part of our curriculum and school ethos. These values are essential in helping our pupils understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens in modern Britain. Our commitment to these values is reflected in our vision of "Working together to Succeed."
The Fundamental British Values
Democracy
We encourage our pupils to participate in decision-making processes within the school. This includes opportunities for pupils to voice their opinions and contribute to school life through various forums and councils.
The Rule of Law
We instil an understanding of the importance of laws in our society. Pupils learn about the civil and criminal laws of England and the significance of following these laws to ensure a safe and fair environment for everyone.
Individual Liberty
We promote the freedom of choice and the right of pupils to make their own decisions. Pupils are encouraged to express their views and make choices in a safe and supportive environment.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance
Our school community is built on respect for all individuals, regardless of their background or beliefs. We promote tolerance and understanding of different cultures, faiths, and lifestyles, helping pupils to appreciate diversity and develop empathy.
Understanding and Respect for Protected Characteristics
We ensure that our pupils understand the importance of respecting the protected characteristics outlined in the Equality Act 2010, which include age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.
Implementation of British Values
- Curriculum Integration: British Values are embedded within our curriculum, particularly in subjects such as Citizenship, PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education), and during assemblies.
- Extra-Curricular Activities: We provide various opportunities for pupils to engage in activities that promote British Values, including community service projects and cultural events.
- School Environment: Our school ethos fosters an atmosphere of respect and inclusion, where every pupil feels valued and heard.
At Harlow Fields School and College, we believe that promoting British Values is vital in preparing our pupils for life in modern Britain. By instilling these values, we aim to develop responsible citizens who contribute positively to society.
