The Importance and Value of Music at Harlow Fields School and College
At Harlow Fields School and College, we recognise that music is not just an art form; it is a vital component of our pupils' educational experience and personal development. Our commitment to fostering a rich musical culture is rooted in our belief that music enhances creativity, emotional expression, and social connection.
This year, we are placing an even greater emphasis on the importance of shared music experiences. Weekly group music assemblies are now a central part of our school life, providing opportunities for pupils across different pathways to come together, celebrate music, and build confidence through collective performance and participation. These assemblies strengthen our sense of community and ensure every pupil feels the joy of being part of something bigger than themselves.
We are also proud to take part in Music Machine live every week, an inclusive SEN online music group. We have been lucky enough to host and broadcast live sessions directly from our school, giving pupils the chance to collaborate with others beyond Harlow Fields. This unique opportunity not only enhances their musical experiences but also allows our pupils to see themselves as part of a wider movement for inclusion and creativity.
Music is not confined to assemblies or special occasions – it is woven into the fabric of everyday life at Harlow Fields. Pupils engage with music most days, particularly during morning circle time and registration, where many classes enjoy a special “day of the week” song. Music is used purposefully across the day: to stimulate and prepare pupils for learning, to support transitions, and to calm and regulate when pupils feel overwhelmed. You will often hear staff and pupils singing together in our school – a sign of happiness, communication, and finding a sense of calm.
Research has shown that music education can significantly enhance cognitive development, including improved memory, attention, and critical thinking skills. Additionally, participating in music activities encourages teamwork and collaboration, helping pupils develop strong social skills that are essential for their future success.
At Harlow Fields, we also understand the importance of cultural capital in enriching our pupils' lives. Our music programme exposes pupils to a diverse range of musical traditions and genres, broadening their cultural understanding and appreciation. Through daily classroom use, weekly assemblies, Join Music Machine, and community engagement, we continue to reinforce our commitment to inclusivity and shared experiences.
In conclusion, music is at the heart of life at Harlow Fields School and College. By nurturing our pupils' musical talents and passions, we are equipping them with the skills, confidence, and joy they need to thrive in all aspects of their lives. Together, we will continue to celebrate the power of music as a transformative force in our school community.
