PMLD Curriculum

Welcome to the PMLD (Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities) curriculum section of Harlow Fields School and College. Our PMLD curriculum is designed with the unique needs of our pupils in mind, focusing on fostering their individual strengths and promoting their overall development.

At Harlow Fields, we believe in the potential of every pupil. Our vision, "Working Together to Succeed," underpins our commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment where all pupils can thrive. The PMLD curriculum is tailored to ensure that each pupil receives a holistic education that addresses their cognitive, emotional, physical, and social needs.

Parents and carers have the right to withdraw their children from any or all Religious Education (RE) lessons. If you wish to exercise this right, please contact your child's class team in the first instance. They will provide you with the necessary information and support regarding the RE syllabus and discuss any questions or concerns you may have. We are committed to ensuring that all pupils' individual beliefs and needs are respected within our school community.

The PMLD curriculum aims to:

  • Enhance Communication Skills: We prioritise the development of communication, using a range of methods including verbal communication, sign language, and alternative communication devices. This empowers our pupils to express their needs, thoughts, and feelings effectively.
  • Promote Independence: Through practical activities and life skills training, we encourage our pupils to develop independence in daily living tasks, enhancing their confidence and self-esteem.
  • Foster Social Interaction: We create opportunities for social engagement, helping pupils build relationships with their peers and staff. This is essential for their emotional well-being and social development.
  • Encourage Sensory Exploration: Our curriculum incorporates sensory activities that stimulate the senses and promote engagement. These experiences are vital for pupils with PMLD, as they help to enhance their understanding of the world around them.
  • Support Physical Development: We focus on physical activities that promote gross and fine motor skills, ensuring that pupils can participate fully in their learning and daily activities.

Recognising that every pupil is unique, our PMLD curriculum is highly individualised. We work closely with families and multidisciplinary teams to develop personalised learning plans that reflect each pupil's interests, preferences, and developmental goals.

We believe in the importance of collaboration between school, families, and the wider community. By working together, we can create a rich learning environment that supports our pupils' growth and development.

At Harlow Fields School and College, we provide a nurturing and empowering educational experience for all our pupils with PMLD. We invite you to explore our curriculum further and discover how we are making a positive impact on the lives of our pupils.
