What do we do here to meet your needs?

Special School Environment: We cater for pupils aged 5-19 with moderate and severe learning difficulties.  This includes complex needs, offering 205 places in small, well-staffed classes.

Educational Commitment: All pupils have an Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP). We provide an equal opportunity educational environment.

Balanced Curriculum: Our curriculum is tailored to address individual needs, fostering responsible and confident citizens who can express their needs, thoughts, and feelings.

Community Engagement: We extend learning and social experiences into the wider community, promoting partnerships with parents, pupils, and professionals.

Supportive Framework: Our approach is built on a nurturing environment, creating a strong sense of belonging for every pupil.


2. What criteria must be satisfied before children and young people can access this provision/service?

What sort of needs would you have for us to be able to help you?

EHCP Requirement: All new pupils must have an Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP).

Admission Process: Admission is coordinated through Essex Local Authority, typically occurring in September, but we accept pupils at any point during the school year.


3. How do we identify the particular special educational needs of a child or young person?

How do we work out what your needs are and how can we help?

Utilisation of EHCP: Each pupil’s EHCP guides us in identifying support needs.

Annual Reviews: We conduct annual reviews to assess and amend provision as necessary.

Collaborative Approach: We engage with parents, carers, and professionals, alongside observations and discussions with previous placements during transition arrangements.

Ongoing Communication: Regular communication with parents ensures we work collaboratively to achieve the best outcomes.


4. How do we consult with parents and/or children and young people about their needs?

How do we find out about what you and your parents think you need to help them?

Pre-Admission Visits: Parents and carers are invited to visit the school before a place is offered.

Regular Meetings: We organise parent meetings each term and an Annual Review for each pupil.  We also provide an end of year report for each pupil. 

Communication Channels: Regular updates are provided through our bi-weekly family newsletter.


5. What is our approach to teaching children and young people with special educational needs?

How will we teach you?

Small Class Groups: Classes are each supported by a teacher and Learning Support Assistants (LSAs).

Engaging Lessons: Lessons are designed to be stimulating and differentiated to meet the diverse needs of all pupils.

Qualified Staff: Our team includes primary-trained and secondary subject specialist teachers.


6. How can we adapt our curriculum for children and young people with special educational needs?

What sort of things will you learn here?

Tailored Curriculum: The curriculum is designed to meet the specific needs of our pupil population.

Specialist Facilities: We have designated spaces for science, food technology, design technology, sensory space, soft play along with our outdoor classrooms and inclusive playgrounds.

Extracurricular Activities: Opportunities include residential trips, sporting events… ensuring practical learning experiences.


7. How will we ensure we get the services, provision, and equipment that the children and young people need?

How will we make sure that you get all of the help that you need from different people?

In-House Support: We have a team of therapists working with staff and pupils. 

Staff Training: The therapist also offers training and support to staff to enhance the educational experience for all pupils.
