At Harlow Fields School and College, we recognise that healthy eating is fundamental to the well-being and development of our pupils. We aim to foster a positive food culture that not only encourages nutritious choices but also enhances the overall school experience. Sharing food together during mealtimes is a vital aspect of our community, as it promotes social interaction and creates an enjoyable atmosphere. By prioritising mealtime enjoyment, we help pupils develop a positive relationship with food, which is essential for their long-term health.

To ensure the safety and well-being of all pupils, Harlow Fields operates as a Nut Free Zone. This policy is crucial for protecting those with allergies while allowing all pupils to enjoy their meals without concern. We are committed to helping our pupils make informed decisions about their diets, which is why we integrate nutrition education into our curriculum. This ensures that all information related to food and nutrition is consistent and up-to-date, empowering pupils to understand the importance of a balanced diet and its impact on their health.

Our school meals, provided by Ashlyns, fully comply with the Government’s National Standards for School Lunches. We take pride in offering a diverse menu that reflects the cultural and dietary needs of our school community, including options for modified textures and Halal meat. By preparing meals on-site using locally sourced ingredients, we not only support healthy eating but also promote sustainability. The menu is shared with parents and carers in advance, allowing them to encourage their children to make healthy choices. Additionally, all pupils in Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 are entitled to free school meals, ensuring that every child has access to nutritious food, regardless of their background.

We also promote healthy snacking and hydration throughout the school day. Pupils in Reception, Key Stage 1, and Key Stage 2 receive free fruit or vegetables daily through the Government Fruit and Vegetable Scheme, while older pupils are encouraged to choose healthy snacks. Water is readily available, and staff actively model the importance of hydration. Our dining environment is designed to support healthy eating habits, foster positive social interactions, and create pleasurable mealtime experiences. By embedding nutrition into our school life, we are not only nurturing healthy lifestyles but also equipping our pupils with the knowledge and skills they need for a healthy future.
